Highslide JS November 2022

With the axleboxes assembled in South Devon and bearing clearances checked, the wheels need to be pressed onto the axles. Before starting the operation, a check is made that the wheels are at 90 degrees to the axle.

The next stage in South Devon is to true the wheel centres before the tyres can be fitted.Note how the machine is working on both wheels at the same time
Highslide JS January 2023

To fit the tyres, South Devon have a tyre heating area. A set of gas burners are stationed around the tyre in a shallow pit and the tyre is heated so that it expands - just enough so that the wheel set assembly can be lowered in. The tyre is then allowed to cool and it will shrink onto the wheel.

With the frame plates bedded to the stretcher, we now need to drill and ream all bolt holes so that fitted bolts can be ordered. We have recently acquired a magnetic drill for this sort of work.
Highslide JS These axlebox spring cups were manufactured by Alpenbury Engineering in Rotherham. They are fitted into recesses at the top of the bogie axle cannon boxes. The round domes of the bogie spring cradle will fit in the cups. These will be a tight fit in the cannon boxes and we need to file a small flat on one side to let the air under the cup escape.
Highslide JS We are ensuring that the axlebox guides fit tightly against the frame plates. Here John is using engineers blue to identify the high spots and then using a scraper to remove them
